TAVERA | A Living Musical Ritual
TAVERA creates intense, sensory-stirring music — a living musical ritual designed to ignite the inner fire within the audience. The ensemble performs original compositions influenced by Eastern modal traditions, including Persian and Azeri classical music, Arabic and Turkish maqam, and Mongolian and Greek folk music, alongside resonances of Western classical music and heavy rock. Situated within the field of world music, the pieces are built layer by layer, gradually unfolding and inviting listeners to surrender to the sound and immerse themselves in the musical journey.
Beyond the melodies that fold within them generations and cultures, what truly grips you in TAVERA is the architecture of sound itself, the structure of tones produced by the instruments and the deeply supportive, complementary group dynamic through which that sound is shaped. The structure of the ensemble can be imagined as a living body moving forward on two rhythmic legs: on the ledt, the tombak (persian drum); on the right, the frame drum. At the center of this body stands the cello, serving as a grounding and nourishing foundation, connecting and sustaining the whole. In the upper part of the body — the thinking, virtuosic, visionary, soaring dimension — the Azeri tar - rises on the left, and the Cretan lyra on the right. The wholeness of the sound becomes possible through this complementary division of roles, ensuring that no instrument or tone overshadows another. From its central position, the cello enables the tar and the lyra, as a duo, to venture into distant lands, to melt and fuse styles, and to soar across time, while at the same time allowing the rhythmic legs to pulse, tap, and dance.
